A loner since his wife was murdered, retired NCIS investigator Jack Dawson moves to Portsmouth, New Hampshire to enjoy his retirement. He also hoped he would someday run into Ray Coombs, the man who killed his wife many years before. Identified but never arrested, Coombs was originally from Portsmouth.
When his clients and friends become the target of random vandalism, he is fine leaving it to the police. When the vandalism turns to violence and affects the people he cares about, this changes everything.
Neither man saw the object drop from the bridge, but both heard it hit, directly behind Steve. Nothing happened for a second and neither man moved, unsure of what had happened. It was during this heartbeat the flame met with the fumes and flames spread across the deck and onto the leg of Steves pants.
As this happened, Steve was jumping back, lost his balance, fell and hit his head on the gunwale. Rich saw this and pushed the throttle into neutral when he saw the flames, unsure of where they came from, but immediately understating that a fire on a boat isnt a good thing.
Jack meets Portsmouth Police Detective Shelia Michaels and her interest in him is obvious. Having seen her with his business acquaintance, Wayne Meher, he keeps his distance, but she does not.
Neither of them realizes that Wayne Meher is really Ray Coombs. The two most intelligent and intuitive men I know of are Sherlock Holmes and General George S. Patton. I think both had unique philosophies and understanding of the human condition. I have a tendency to be judgmental about people. To remind me its not always such a good thing, I had a small sign made and it remains on the wall of my boat:
